Board Game Geek servers are ruined by office fire!
A fire at the central office has caused a major scramble at Board Game Geek. Scott Alden is reported as saying “because of the extensive damage of the servers that most people will have to reenter their profile information, and Board Game Geek will do their best to compensate for lost material”. Other members of BGG staff are working hard to recover the remaining data from the ten damaged servers that weren’t completely destroyed from the fire.
Anonymous sources say it might take another two months before the site will be back up, and staff having restored data to pre-fire levels. Board Game Geek was founded January 2000, and has a large active community with over 400,000 members. Staff fears are that over half of these members will have to start from scratch and spend another 40 hours of their life adding each and every board game to their online collections and re-enter their personal ratings. Joel Eddy a highly active member of the site was quoted as saying “it has been years since I have played many of my games and I am not even sure which ones I like any more, or if I have even traded them away”. Geeks will morn for weeks to come.
This was our April’s Fools Joke this year. Hope everyone had a happy harmless day !

I’m realy hoping this is an April Fools joke…
Not very good idea, even on April Fool’s Day… there is a chance of some legal action here as you are claiming that BGG could be down for 2 months which could affect their business. I am not a fanboy of BGG, I am a fanboy of your site trying to be helpful… not everyone sees that “fake news” when it isn’t made more explicit on the site.
I have it on good authority there will be no legal action actually.
Geez.
Willi B,
Thanks for your concern ! We are not out to hurt anybody just to have a little fun !

Just saw the Twitter reply from BGG… seems like they got the joke. All good in Fools Day.
Good lord you got me! I admit it, I believed it until I read “Assumption Press”!
HOLY CRAP! You really had me going there!
Not only missing my hourly fix of BGG for months, but me needing to re-input my over 1000 game collection entries — waaannh haann haann haann!
Whew.
Epic win
