Dominant Species (A Video Review)

2 August 2012 One Comment

Game Overview:

90,000 B.C. — A great Ice Age is fast approaching. Another titanic struggle for global supremacy has unwittingly commenced between the varying animal species.

Dominant Species is a game for 2 to 6 players that abstractly recreates a tiny portion of ancient history: the ponderous encroachment of an Ice Age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly-changing Earth.

Each player will assume the role of one of six major Animal groups—Mammal, Reptile, Bird, Amphibian, Arachnid or Insect. Each begins the game in a state of natural balance with regards to one another. But that won’t last: It is indeed “survival of the fittest.”

Great review as usual Marco! I agree that this game is deep, immersive and epic, with layers that reveal themselves during play, and over time. It is, in my opinion, one of the best designs in recent memory. I think the biggest compliment I can give is that this is a “standing game”, or a game where you are so engrossed and wrapped up in what is happening that you simply cannot sit, but must hover over the map, chewing on your nails while you watch other players turns and try like heck to figure out how that last move now totally changes what you were about to do before that happened. The game is one in which time seems to have no meaning until you look up when it is over and discover you are both mentally and, quite often, emotionally drained. I don’t now what else to say! Thanks for a thoughtful review, and my best to you and your growing family. I miss you on WCandIS. Best of luck in the future to you and yours!
