For this special Quick Look episode of The Long View, I examine the game Police Precinct including an overview and review of this new cooperative game from designer Ole Steiness from Common Man Games. Along the way, I compare and contrast this new offering with such cooperative classics as Pandemic, Shadows over Camelot, and the more recent Flash Point Fire Rescue. Finally, we get the perspective of a special guest and young gamer, Sophia, who shares her opinions about what makes this game different from others in this genre.

Thanks for this quick look. I am constantly looking for games to play with my kids and try to judge how well it will play with them. So I think it was good to hear your daughter’s perspective as well. Sounds like she is a pretty experienced gamer, while mine are just getting started. How old is Sophia and your others? What would be the youngest you’d recommend to play it? BGG recommends 13+ for the game, so that had kind of scared me off of getting it for mine.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! As far as the kids go, my youngest is 9, and my oldest is 12. They have no problems playing the game, bu they have been playing games since they were very young. If you run the game, and let them just worry about making their decisions, young ones should be fine. The bookkeeping parts of the game like any other co-op are best handled by you, but the game is no more difficult to grok than Pandemic or Defenders of the Realm. I hope that helps! Give it a shot, if not, they’ll grow into it! I have many games that I am pretty well done with, but am holding onto because I know the kids will eventually like them, and I’ll enjoy playing with them when the time comes.

Enjoyed the podcast. Loved hearing from Sophie–she is a very well-spoken girl. For games with kid-appeal, I’d love to hear more from her in the future. I’m always trying to find games my kids will enjoy.
