Star Trek: Frontiers Board Game

Star Trek Frontiers Banner

WizKids, maker of quality board games and miniatures, is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Star Trek: Frontiers. Designed by Andrew Parks, Star Trek: Frontiers puts a new spin on the bestselling board game Mage Knight, by Vlaada Chvátil.

“Like the Mage Knight board game, Star Trek: Frontiers allows players to explore areas that are new and different each time they play. I can’t wait for Star Trek fans to start commanding their Federation and Klingon ships as they encounter Romulan Warbirds, send carefully chosen away teams down to unknown planets, and challenge the might of the Borg,” said Frontiers game designer, Andrew Parks.

“The Star Trek universe opens up a huge variety of thematic options for a designer, and I specifically hope fans of Star Trek will enjoy the work that Andrew has done to bring the system to the world of Star Trek,” said Vlaada Chvátil, creator of the original Mage Knight.

Similar to Mage Knight, in Star Trek: Frontiers, players will follow multiple scenarios leading them on a journey into the unknown. They will earn Experience Points and further their Reputation as a Captain while commanding their Ship, recruiting new Crew Members and encountering some of the undiscovered mysteries of space.

The Star Trek: Frontiers board game features both competitive and cooperative scenarios and is designed for 1 to 4 players. Solo game scenarios are also included at the end of the Full Rulebook.

For more information on Star Trek: Frontiers, and other great games by WizKids, visit WizkidsGames.com.

I am a huge fan of games designed by Vlaada, this is heading towards the must buy category very quickly, this coming from a none Star Trek fan! It doesn’t hurt that Andrew Parks knocked it out of the park with Core Worlds (best space deck builder PERIOD).

ROAR! Catch The Monster A New Hybrid Tablet Game

Roar box

Roar! Catch The Monster is a new game in the hybrid tablet genre, much like games such as Golem Arcana, Alchemists, and even X-Com The board game. It is a deduction game for families with children ages 7+ and it works for both Android and that funny Apple ecosystem.

Roar board_advance_frame

Roar! is billed as a dynamic deduction game for entire family. Grab a mobile device in your hands, become a monster and run away from the scientists bent on catching you. As scientists you will have to listen closely to the sounds of the bustling city, just to be able to find out where your escapee is hiding, so you can get him before it’s too late.

Roar Monsters

The Scientists move their pawns on the board to designated fields. The player who controls the monster has a mobile device, which is the main tool of the game. They move around the same fields as the Scientists, but their movement can only be
detected on a screen. Which makes me think about a modern evolution of Fury of Dracula and similar hidden movement games.

Stronghold Games and Portal Games Announce “Stronghold – 2nd Edition
New Jersey, USA and Gliwice, Poland – February 2, 2015
Stronghold Games and Portal Games are proud to announce jointly the release of Stronghold – 2nd Edition, a reprinting and reworking of the Portal Games best-selling title, Stronghold, originally released in 2009.
Stronghold – 2nd Edition is a 2–4 player game, which tells the story of the siege of a castle. Players take on the roles of either the defenders or attackers with one side defending the stronghold and the other attempting to break into the stronghold through its highly fortified walls as quickly as possible.
In Stronghold – 2nd Edition, the game board represents the stronghold itself, as well as the surrounding terrain from where the attacking forces launch their siege against the walls of the stronghold. The defender has a small number of soldiers manning the walls, while the invader has an infinite legion of attacking creatures.  A desperate fight takes place every turn. The invaders build war machines, equip their soldiers, train them, and use black magic rituals to achieve victory.  Meanwhile, the defenders repair walls, build cannons, train soldiers, and do everything they can to hold the castle as long as possible.
While all of the differences between the original Stronghold and Stronghold – 2nd Edition were not available at press time, some of the changes will include:

  • Streamlined rules and enhanced rulebook
  • Shorter gameplay, featuring attackers being placed on the board during setup
  • Glory Points rules replaced with a more straightforward system of castle defense in 7 rounds
  • Improved components, such as a larger game board and new better artwork

Stronghold Games and Portal Games will print Stronghold – 2nd Edition together.  Stronghold Games will have worldwide English rights (except Europe) for this game. Portal Games will maintain all other language rights and distribute an English language version in Europe.
Stronghold – 2nd Edition has a tentative release of 4Q 2015.  Both Stronghold Games and Portal Games will premiere the game at the Essen Spiel in October 2015.  The retail price for the game was not available at press time.
“The release of Stronghold – 2nd Edition is an extraordinary event for us”, said Stephen M. Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “Not only does this title make obvious sense from a branding perspective within the Stronghold Games catalog, but we are able to work with the great Portal Games on this project.  Portal Games has proven year after year, game after game, to be one of the premiere hobby game publishers in the world.  We are very happy to be working with them on this project.”
“We are very excited to be working with such a great company as Stronghold Games”, said Ignacy Trzewiczek, President of Portal Games.  “Though we are now doing our own distribution within North America for our other titles, partnering with Stronghold Games on this game has obvious good branding implications for both companies. It will be great to put this game back in print in a second edition with Stronghold Games.”

Sorry all I pressed Stephen for more information but the only thing extra I got out of him would cost me a visit from men in black suits, driving black cars, and flying black helicopters if I released it…. Soon though, very, very soon!

I’ll just hint that this is a Grail Game for Stronghold Games, come on, Stronghold From Stronghold Games, You Know This Will Be Special!

Epic PvP: Fantasy announced from Fun to 11 and AEG

Fun to 11 LLC and Alderac Entertainment Group Inc. (AEG), both publishers of fun and unique games, today announce that they have entered into a strategic partnership for Fun to 11’s new game EPIC PvP.

EPIC PvP is a fast, fun and unique card game. The concept is simple; take a class deck and shuffle it into a race deck to get a character deck. Players use those decks and the combos created by the unique pairing to battle each other.

The companies will partner to run an exciting Kickstarter campaign launching January 21st. After the Kickstarter backers get their rewards, AEG will publish and distribute Epic PvP: Fantasy to retailers later this year through AEG’s distribution partners.

“AEG makes great games and they have a fantastic relationship with the retail market.  It makes sense for Fun to 11 to partner with a company who could handle that side of distribution without disrupting our desire to focus on making fun, quality games and delivering them to our customers, ” says Luke Peterschmidt, CEO of Fun to 11.

John Zinser, CEO of AEG adds, “Epic PvP: Fantasy is just a fun game and when we played it we knew immediately that we wanted to be part of it.  Luke and I have been friends for over 20 years. So after playing a few times and discussing all the cool things we could do together on the game, we realized it is a perfect chance to partner –  something we have both been trying to make happen since working on L5R together long ago.”

Both companies agree that EPIC PvP: Fantasy is the right game to partner on. And by doing so, we will end up with a product that is better for players and retailers.  Retailers will get the chance to “Kick” the game with us.  More information on this option coming this week.

Okay this is my take on things, I need more information before I just write this off as a new tweak on Smash-up.

I like Smash-up and applaud new themes but this press release is too darn bare bones to tell me anything else. Which means I need to contact AEG for more information! I’ll update with what they send me.
