Smash Up: The Obligatory Cthulhu Review

Smash up Cth

In the second expansion to Smash Up, Alderac Entertainment Group borrows from the mind of Lovecraft. They bring four new factions and a brand new mechanic – Madness.

The four factions are fairly standard but all pretty heavily play off the Madness mechanic. This mechanic forces players to get Madness cards which could be played like actions. At the end of the game (when someone hits 15 VP), you subtract 1 VP for every two Madness cards in your possession. This may be your discard, deck, or hand.

The Obligatory Cthulhu Set brings everything you love about Smash Up and ties it very nicely to the Cthulhu Mythos. The four factions included are the People of Innsmouth, Minions of Cthulhu, Elder Things, and the Miskatonic University.

Being a huge fan of the Mythos and think this is a near per

fect expansion. My one gripe being very picky. The Madness mechanic only works if you are playing one of the new factions, otherwise it never comes into play. I know, I know – duh. I think in the future new table mechanics should be able to work regardless of what factions are in play. This could avoid invalidating sets – potentially.
