WizKids/NECA, LLC (WizKids), the leader in collectible gaming, is inviting gamers, collectors and Star Trek fans alike to recreate some of the most iconic battles in Star Trek lore. Today WizKids announces the latest board game title to join their Star Trek HeroClix™ miniatures game line-up, Star Trek: Attack Wing. It features collectible pre-painted Star Trek ships and the FlightPath™ maneuver system licensed from Fantasy Flight Games. Under license by CBS Consumer Products, Star Trek: Attack Wing is expected to launch late summer at Gen Con Indy 2013.
Players engage in exploration and combat, traversing sprawling Star Trek space maps made available via an in store Organized Play program. As commander, players have the ability to customize, upgrade, and assign famous crewmembers to their fleets, which feature ships from the series’ prominent empires and forces as well as special stats and abilities, and unique maneuvers on separate HeroClix Combat Dials™.
“The FlightPath™ maneuver system used in FFG’s game is an amazing system for free-form movement in a space combat game,” said Justin Ziran, president at WizKids. “It’s a natural fit for the Star Trek universe. Players familiar with the FlightPath™ system will most definitely enjoy Star Trek: Attack Wing.”
The Table Top… the final frontier! Through my entire geek filled life, there have been few constants. One though, is this; either you love Star Trek or you love Star Wars. Very rarely do the two co-exist. Both licenses are extremely popular in pop culture and geek culture, with everything from toys and bed sheets to documentaries being made about them, their fans, and their experiences living in their unique universes.
I myself have always been a Star Wars fan. I’ve been recently playing the Star Wars Living Card Game from Fantasy Flight Games and enjoying it very much. Meanwhile, my boss, Mrs. Tox, has always been a Trekkie, not hard core, but enough to put me in my place when I say something dumb about how many buttons a commander has on their collar or something. However, aside from a few random game, she still pined for a good Trekkie game.
So when I was approached about doing a review for this game, I knew it would both be interesting, passionate, and exciting, so how could I say “no”? Thankfully, I didn’t, and as such, I transportered myself onto the bridge and prepared to tackle the final frontier!
…the Final Frontier. The many resource rich planets within the limits of Federation territory await exploration and settlement. Build outposts and star bases to extract the resources. Using your fleet of starships, establish supply routes that enable you to boldly go further into deep space. Avoid resource shortages by trading with your opponents and Federation neighbors. If your opponents venture too far into your space, though, you might need to divert the Klingons to drive them away… because in the end, only one can be the Federation’s greatest hero! Take up the challenge!
